From the night after Thanksgiving through mid-December, more holiday events happen at the corner of Atlanta Avenue and Lake Park Boulevard than anywhere else on Pleasure Island. The tree and light displays around the lake go on Friday, Nov. 27. Santa comes back to the same shoreline twice. A crafts market fills the park on a December Saturday. The Christmas parade starts at the same corner and heads north up the boulevard. Two different groups put on those events, but they share one park.
Two calendars, one shoreline
The Island of Lights Committee runs the festival's signature nights. The parade is the one big event it no longer handles. The committee posts this note on its site:
"The town of Carolina Beach has informed the Island of Lights Committee that beginning in 2023 they will be assuming all responsibility for the annual Christmas Parade. Therefore, the Island of Lights Committee will no longer sponsor, or be affiliated with, this event."
That note explains why the season's dates come from two places. Here is how the 2026 events split between the two organizers:
- Island of Lights Committee: the Lighting at the Lake on Nov. 27, the Christmas Flotilla on Dec. 5, the Holiday Tour of Homes on Dec. 12 and the New Year's Eve Celebration on the boardwalk.
- Town of Carolina Beach: the Christmas Parade on Dec. 4 and Santa by the Sea at Lake Park on Nov. 28 and Dec. 19.
The committee's own page calls the Nov. 27 lighting the official start of "the month long Island of Lights Festival in Carolina & Kure Beaches." The ceremony starts at 6:30 p.m., it's free, and Santa will be there to hear wish lists. The displays around the lake are sponsored by the committee, and its site invites anyone to walk the loop and look at them. So the town's own evenings at the lake take place among displays the committee sponsors.
Friday night to Saturday night, Dec. 4 and 5
The two calendars meet in the first full weekend of December. The parade, the market and the flotilla all fall within about 24 hours:
- Friday, Dec. 4, 7 p.m.: The Carolina Beach Christmas Parade runs from Atlanta Avenue down Lake Park Boulevard to Federal Point Shopping Center. It's free for spectators and usually lasts until about 9 p.m. The tourism bureau's listing promises floats, bands and Santa Claus.
- Saturday, Dec. 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.: The Carolina Beach Holiday Market takes over Lake Park. Admission is free, and the listing describes more than 90 handmade and artisan vendors selling things like shark's teeth, soaps, yard art and fine art.
- Saturday, Dec. 5, 6 p.m.: The Island of Lights Christmas Flotilla sets out on the Intracoastal Waterway.
In practice, the parade and the market use the same few blocks of Lake Park Boulevard less than a day apart, and the flotilla moves the crowd to the water three hours after the last market booth closes. You could spend all of Saturday on the island and catch both Saturday events without driving anywhere else.
The flotilla belongs to the Boat Basin
The flotilla is the one event that leaves the lake behind. Decorated boats "of all shapes and sizes" run from Snow's Cut to the Carolina Beach Boat Basin and back, competing for prizes. A panel of judges picks the winners, and spectators can text a vote for the People's Choice award. That makes the shoreline crowd part of the contest. It's free to watch.
The basin is where the crowd gathers. In its 2025 holiday preview, the StarNews wrote that the largest crowds tend to collect at the yacht basin end of the route. Last December, WECT reported that the boats went out despite weather challenges, so a damp forecast hasn't automatically cancelled the parade on the water.
Lake Park's quieter evenings
The busy weekend gets most of the attention, but Lake Park's lights stay up between the big dates. Santa by the Sea, presented by the town, has two evenings this season, Saturday, Nov. 28 and Saturday, Dec. 19. Both run 5 to 7 p.m., admission is free, and the listing says the lights look best after dark and some activities depend on the weather. The Nov. 28 date falls the night after the lighting, so the first Santa visit at the lake comes with the displays still new.
A lap around the lake goes well with a stop on Lake Park Boulevard. Seaside Shenanigans Boutique and Celtic Creamery share a building at 201 N. Lake Park Blvd. Celtic Creamery serves Irish-style ice cream, and the tourism bureau's holiday guide suggests pairing gift shopping at one with a scoop at the other. Two of the boulevard's newer spots opened in 2025. In May 2025, the StarNews reported Island Burgers & Bites opening its freestanding restaurant at 254 N. Lake Park Blvd, with indoor and outdoor seating. Riko's Pizza opened its first North Carolina location at 1000 N. Lake Park Blvd in September 2025 and held its ribbon cutting Oct. 6, the StarNews reported.
Kure Beach and the pier fill in the gaps
The Lake Park dates cluster from late November into early December. The rest of the island covers the weekends around them, mostly near the ocean.
The Kure Beach Holiday Market sets up at Ocean Front Park & Pavilion on Saturday, Nov. 21 and again on Saturday, Nov. 28, with handmade goods from local vendors. On Nov. 21, The Merry Market on the Beach is listed at Carolina Beach Pier. The Christmas Palm Tree Lighting is listed at the pier in early December, just after the flotilla. Nov. 28 is especially full, with the Kure Beach Holiday Market at the pavilion and Santa by the Sea at the lake from 5 p.m.
Later in December, Ocean Front Park & Pavilion hosts the Kure Beach Holiday Whoobie Whatty on Friday, Dec. 18, and Holiday Story Time by the Sea on Saturday, Dec. 19. The story time lands on the same day as Santa's second Lake Park visit, so families can do both towns in one Saturday.
One Island of Lights event covers both towns. The Holiday Tour of Homes, on Saturday, Dec. 12 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., is a self-guided tour of decorated houses across Carolina and Kure Beaches. Tickets are $12 and sold at Pleasure Island businesses. The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce also hosts an annual Holiday Shopping Spree weekend, when participating shops run sales and raffle off baskets.
The committee closes the season on the boardwalk
The Island of Lights calendar ends at the beach. The New Year's Eve Celebration on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk starts at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31. It's free and family-friendly, with a DJ and dancing. Refreshments and party favors are for sale, a beach ball drops at midnight, and fireworks follow. The committee behind the Nov. 27 lighting at the lake also runs the countdown on the boardwalk five weeks later.
If you're thinking about a place on Pleasure Island where Lake Park's lights or the Boat Basin are a short walk away in December, I'd be glad to talk through which streets put you closest to the events you'd use most. Stephanie Vogel knows this island in every season. Let's Connect.
